Bohag Bihu 2025 is set to bring joy, colour, and tradition to the state of Assam and Assamese communities around the world. Known as "Rongali Bihu", this vibrant festival marks the Assamese New Year and the beginning of the agricultural season. In 2025, Bohag Bihu will be celebrated from April 14th to April 20th, with the main day falling on April 14th, 2025. 
 
What is Bohag Bihu?

Bohag Bihu, also called Rongali Bihu, is one of the three Bihus celebrated in Assam—the others being Magh Bihu and Kati Bihu. Bohag Bihu is the most widely celebrated and culturally significant among the three. It symbolizes the arrival of spring and a fresh agricultural cycle. The festival is rooted in agrarian traditions and celebrates new beginnings, community bonding, and cultural identity. 
 
Dates and Schedule for Bohag Bihu 2025 -
  1. Goru Bihu (Cow Bihu) – April 13, 2025: The day before the Assamese New Year, when cows and other domestic animals are bathed and worshipped.
  2. Manuh Bihu (New Year’s Day) – April 14, 2025: Marks the Assamese New Year with people wearing new clothes, seeking blessings from elders, and enjoying traditional feasts.
  3. Kutum Bihu, Senehi Bihu, Mela Bihu – April 15–20, 2025: Days of social gatherings, fairs, romantic expressions, and community events.

Traditions and Celebrations -
 
  1. Bihu Dance and Songs One of the highlights of Bohag Bihu is the 'Bihu dance', performed by young men and women in traditional attire. Accompanied by Bihu geet (folk songs), dhol (drums), pepa (horn), and gogona (reed instrument), these performances bring every community alive with energy and joy. 
  2. Traditional Attire Women wear elegant (mekhela chadors) with intricate designs, while men don (dhoti and gamusa), often adorned with red motifs.
  3. Delicious Bihu Cuisine The Bihu feast includes a variety of Assamese delicacies like pitha(rice cakes), laru(sweet balls made from coconut and jaggery), tenga(sour fish curry), and maasor tenga(tangy fish curry). 
  4. Games and Community Fairs Local fairs (Bihu melas) are held across towns and villages, featuring traditional sports, music, dance, and local handicrafts.
